House of the Wayward Girls

On Saturday 20 May I’ll be accompanying veteran butoh master Joan Laage at the Chapel Performance Space in the Good Shepherd Center . Please join us.

This evening, directed by Joan Laage/Kogut Butoh and composer Amy Denio, and co-created with the performers, celebrates the wayward girls who lived in the Good Shepherd Center, their lives real and imaginary.

While attending a performance at the Chapel, which we do frequently, my husband exclaimed, “the house of the pregnant girls,” and I suddenly decided to create a piece inspired by the center’s history and occupants. The Sisters of the Good Shepherd order started in France, spread to the US and in 1890, a train brought five nuns through the forest and mountains to Seattle. The center provided shelter, education, and guidance to young girls so they could become caring, responsible, and moral young women. An emphasis on morality was most likely strongly linked to sexuality. Today’s increasing restrictions on sex education coupled with the denial of fluid gender identity are also burdened by what might be called the “moral imperative.” There is great political pressure on women concerning their rights as sexual beings, potential mothers, etc., with the self-determination of women’s bodies being eroded.

Out with a Bang

Just composed my new creation for string quartet. Diabolical Thing is based on a simple melody I co-wrote with my 9-year old piano student Simon Englehardt. It’s always fun creating music with him. Our piece will premiere on Thursday, February 16 at the Chapel Performance Space in Wallingford for the next Seattle Composers Alliance Live Sessions.

Thanks to the folks supporting my projects on Patreon and my music on Bandcamp, I recently invested in a nice MacBookPro to start making short videos again. It was like getting on a bicycle after a long hiatus. I was enthralled, and would laugh hysterically.

The first short film, Hansville with Grits is made with love for my fiance. A year ago we moved into a rustic twin peak chalet on the edge of a wildlife sanctuary in north Kitsap Peninsula. It’s what we both needed.

HÍSW̱ḴE SIAM (pronounced HAISH-ka see-EM) is a respectful Coastal Salish greeting. I made it with reverence for all of the ancestors, on whose dust we walk.

My fiancé Gritspapi took this photo after we finished the epic David Bowie tribute night SMASH-Seattle benefit at the Moore Theater on November 20, 2022. https://www.smashseattle.org/.

This week I’m preparing for next week’s trip to play music in Rome, Italy!

I will play a concert or two, teach a fantastic vocal workshop called IMPROVOKALL and also record on and produce the third album by chamber jazz sextet OU!

Overwhelming Positivity Tour!

Kultur Shock met up to prepare for our summer tour in Sofia Bulgaria yesterday. After a day-long rehearsal, our bassist Guy suggested that we rename the tour as the Overwhelming Positivity Tour. And so it is!

Our friend Tico made this poster a while back, and though some of the dates and places have changed (see the previous post), we ADORE the graphic ~ as always. Genius!

KULTUR SHOCK returns to the OLD COUNTRIES!

We’re baaack in action ~ Kultur Shock is meeting in Sofia Bulgaria in a few days to rehearse with brother Oggi Kiossovski on drums and Darko Saračević on the mixing console. Then we’ll hit the road with due fervor.

There are still some concerts to be confirmed, but this is what we know for now!
